The oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates of Meretrix lyrata were studied in laboratory by means of ecological methods. The results are as the followings: 1) Under the conditions of experimental temperature 13-33 ℃ and salinitie 13-33, the oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates of M. lyrata are negatively correlated with its body weight and their relationship may possibly be expressed by power function (i. e. Y=aWb ). 2) The water temperature has a distinct effect on the oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates of M. lyrata with different size (P〈0.01). The oxygen consumption rate of M. lyrata increases with the increasing of water temperature at 13-28 ℃ and reaches to the maximum at 28 ℃. When the water temperature goes higher than 28 ℃, however, the oxygen consumption rate of M. lyrata decreases, whereas its ammonia excretion rate tends to keep increasing markedly. In different temperature ranges, the respiration rate Q10 of M. lyrata ranges from 0.49-2.75, with the average being 1.56, and its excretion rate Q10 ranges from 1.14-3.58, with the average being 1.96. When the temperature is in the range of 13-28 ℃, the O : N value of M. lyrata is 8.84-14.15, with the average being 11.22, but at a temperature of 33 ℃ the O : N value of M. lyrata goes down to 6.36-7.57, with the average being 6.89. 3) The water salinity has also a distinct effect on the oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates of M. lyrata with different size (P〈0.01). When the salinity is in the range of 13-23, the oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates of M. lyrata increase with the salinity and reach the maximum at 23. When the salinity increases to 28 and 33, however, the oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates of M. lyrata tend to decrease. The O : N value of M. lyrata increases also with the salinity and reaches to the maximum at 23. When the salinity increases to 28 and 33, the O: N value tends to decrease and goes down to the lowest at 33. All of these results would contribute to investigate carrying capacity of aquiculture for M. byrata and study ocean ecosystem dynamics and shelfish energy.
