[Objective]This paper aims to analyze the climatology of explosive cyclones(ECs)over the Yellow-Bohai Seas(YBS)and Northeastern China(NEC)so as to reveal their climatological characteristics, providing scientific basis for understanding the occurrence and development, disaster prevention and mitigation of ECs.[Methods]Using ERA5 reanalysis data provided by the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, the objective identification and tracking methods of ECs were employed to statistically analyze the climatic characteristics of ECs over the YBS and NEC from 1959 to 2022.(Results and Conclusions)Over the past 64 years,a total of 104 ECs occurred over the YBS and NEC.YBS ECs generally resulted from the explosive development of the Jiang-Huai or Yellow River cyclones after they moved into the sea.Meanwhile,NEC ECs were mainly the Mongolian or northeastern China cyclone after moving eastward to the northeastern China.ECs occurred over the YBS and NEC are both 52 cases, most of which were weak and moderate ECs,few strong ECs,and no super ECs.The frequency of ECs over the YBS and NEC had maximum in spring, but minimum in winter.YBS ECs occurred frequently in spring and summer, seldom in autumn and winter. In contrast,NEC ECs appeared mostly in autumn, leastly in winter. The seasonal distribution between the two regions was significantly different in autumn. The monthly frequencies of YBS and NEC ECs showed great seasonal imbalance, and the imbalance of NEC ECs was greater. The average explosive intensity(1.23 Bergeron)and duration(16.9 h)of YBS ECs were stronger and longer than those of NEC ECs(1.22 Bergeron and 15.3 h).However, the average value of minimum central sea level pressure of YBS ECs were higher(989.6 hPa),than that of the NEC ECs(985.6 hPa).Compared with the statistical characteristics of ECs over the North Pacific and North Atlantic revealed in previous studies by Yoshida A,et al(2004),Zhang S Q,et al(2017),and Wang C C,et al(2001),it is found that ECs over the YBS and NEC have a weaker explosive intensity, higher minimum central sea level pressure, and shorter lifetime than the ECs over the marine, and their frequent occurrence seasons show significant differences.
