Hematological indices of American red fish (Sciaenops ocellatus) were investigated. The erythrocyte and leukocyte counts of American red fish were(1. 95±0.37) ×10^6 ind · mm^-3and (2.08± 0.43) × 10^4 ind · mm^-3 respectively, the hemoglobin content was(6.65±1.06)g ·L^-1, the erythrocyte osmotic fragility was 0.40±0.06g%, and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate was(1.15±0.10) mm · h^-1. On the stained smears of peripheral blood, erythrocytes, thrombocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, ensinophilic granulocytes, neutrophils, and basophilic granulocytes were recognized. The percentages of thrombocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, ensinophilic granulocytes, and neutrophils in total leucocytes were(68.42±11. 62)%, (14.50±9.25)%, (1.46±1.80)%, (13.01±7.73)% and(2.61±3.76)%, respectively. Some immature blood cells could also be observed on the smears. The development of the blood cells in liver, spleen, pronephros and kidney was studied. The results showed that the blood cells of American red fish develops mainly in pronephros and kidney; spleen is an important tissue for the development of lymphocytes and works as an assistant for the generation of monocytes and granulocytes, while liver is important for the development of granulocytes. The development of thrombocyte had not been observed in these four tissues.
